Re-Post: Prefold instructions for sports lovers

November 30th, 2008 by adrienne

I found this in my archives and I just had to re-post it!

1. Spread the diaper in the position of the diamond with you at bat.
2. Then fold second base down to home and set the baby on the pitcher’s mound.
3. Put first base and third together, bring up home plate and pin the three together.
4. Of course, in case of rain, you gotta call the game and start all over again.

Why I love prefolds…

November 30th, 2008 by adrienne

I don’t think I ever posted the reasons I love prefolds… nope, just searched and it’s not there. So here goes!

1. They are versatile — if one fold stops working for you, there’s always another to try! (And you can go back to where you started if you want to too!)

2. They always fit — When you use pockets or AIOs (all-in-ones) you have to worry about how the legs and waist fit and you will often end up trying a gazillion diapers. With prefolds, you just try a different fold. (see #1)

3. They are cheap — If you try them and hate them, you are not out very much money. Likewise, if you wreck them, you’re not out that much money either! Finally, you can try every one under the sun and not be broke. LOL. (I’ve tried three or four brands of three kinds.) You really do save money with this method.

4. You can sterilize them — If the little one gets a nasty rash that won’t go away (ie: yeast) you can boil, bleach and sun (lay them out in the sun) to sterilize them. You can’t boil anything with snaps because they’ll melt, you can’t bleach anything that is fancy (ie: minkee) and sunning doesn’t address the insides of the AIOs.

5. They get really clean — At the thickest point of the thickest diaper there is, at most, 8 layers of birdseye or twill or whatever the prefold is made of. This means that they wash out really well and they dry thoroughly.

6. They look cute — they are simple and almost boring, but they are cute in their own way.

7. You can dye them — and if you hate the dye job, you can buy new ones to start over.

8. Snappis are fun — no more pins if you don’t want them! (Although pins are so fun after you get the hang of it!)

9. Simple wash routine — cold rinse, hot wash, cold wash, then into dryer for 60-90 minutes.

10. If you get sick of using them, they can become stuffin’s for pockets or a handy-dandy cleaning rag.

I love my prefolds!

“What kind of cloth diapers do you use?”

March 19th, 2008 by admin

Lauren asked me about our CD stash last week. We have three types of diapers in our stash: Fuzzi Bunz, Tinkle Traps and GMD prefolds, but let me start with the simplest one:

GMD prefolds are a certain brand of prefolds. They cost a bit more and you have to pay for shipping (as opposed to the free shipping offered by a lot of sites) but I find that we don’t get nearly the number of rashes with these as I do with other brands, not to mention they last forever due to the quality of materials use. There are ladies on the different boards I’m on who brag that the GMDs they bought 10 years ago are still useable. These two things combined make it worth it to spend an extra buck or two, and then, on top of that, the sizing is awesome. Karen has done quite a bit of experimenting with different dimensions and the result is a diaper for almost every baby at every stage without having to do a bunch of folding down which causes bulk, etc. etc. Oh yes, and she has started offering an unbleached version which I hear is a lot softer. I’m going to try those out when I order next time! Prices for GMD prefolds range from $1-3 each. You’ll need to use a fastener (snappi or pins) and a cover. I’ll talk more about those in another post.

Tinkle Traps are a prefitted diaper which is basically a glorified prefold. It’s cut to fit a baby without having to do any folding and it has elastic in the legs. You can have them made with a aplix or snap closures, or you can use pins/snappi to close them. You also need a cover for these.

Fuzzi Bunz are a pocket diaper. The outer layer is the waterproof layer and the inner layer is a stay-dry fabric. There is a pocket that you can put absorbent materials into. The diapers are about 17.95 each unless if you can find some of the older styles that were on clearance last year for 13.95. They come with a microfiber insert. I personally prefer to use a prefold because it seems to absorb better and I don’t get as many leaks.

Why did I choose this stash? I’m so glad you asked!

Fluffy Mail

February 27th, 2008 by admin

Chautona, you may wish to stop reading now because I’m going to expound on the joys of one your absolutely favorite topics… I got my box from Tinkle Traps! I had e-mailed Tammy a few weeks ago asking if she had time to take on customs work and she said yes, but I’d have to wait a few weeks. No problem. More time to droll over the options! Here’s what came in the mail today…

2271.jpg
These are GMD toddlers that I had custom-dyed by Karen at Splash Coloria. I had Tammy convert them with a 17-1/2″ rise. They have hemp backed, organic velour topped quick-dry stitched inserts. No closures since I’ll use a snappi or pins.

Here are the rest. The two on the top left are also GMD toddlers. The upper right group are GMD green edge infants. (Karen at GMD doesn’t sell those anymore, they have been replaced by the new yellow-edge infants.) The bottom group are a bunch of brown edge premiums.

I’m very pleased! The toddlers work very well for the little Munchkin right now. I like that they work well overnight or for errands and for church. The browns will provide a very trim fit for her to wear during the physical and occupational therapy and the itty bitty infants are for when the new model arrives. (No that is NOT an announcement. LOL.)
